Double glazing advice please!

Hi all.

I'm going to be renovating a bungalow over the next couple of months and one of the first things that needs updating are the windows.

I'd like to have some double glazed PVC windows fitted and will be contacting several companies to get some quotes over the coming days.
However, my knowledge on windows is lacking and I'm not really sure what questions I should be asking.

Also, I've seen some people mention different profiles of PVC windows, such as "Duraflex" and "Rehau" - What are they referring to?
Is that the different type of PVC material used in the windows?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • I don't know much ..but if i was having any fitted ..they would have the beadings on the inside ..some cut price double glazing firms still use the external beading ..ive heard burglars can access your house by removing the unit in that type..
and internal beading means units can be replaced without a ladder ..

there are all types of different units in them ..im behind with the changes ,..

    but look out for

    argon filled
    low e
    pilkington k-glass .
    some are triple glazed
and the wider the gap between each pain the more efficient they are.

and most of the best ones look like they are tinted .

patio doors should have stainless steel runners with stainless ball bearing wheels....front and back doors..locks should be kite marked ..or the insurers wont insure you in some areas .

there are lots of outfits out there ..that will do a rough job ..so beware .

After they should be inspected and given a fensa certificate ...if you are not going to stay in the house all your life ..you need this piece of paper to help you sell it .

    all the best.markj

    Thanks.

All the companies I will be having around are quite well known and all have FENSA certificates. It will be important because I do plan to sell the bungalow within 18 months of renovating it.

I didn't know about the issue with external beading. I will definitely ask them about this and have a good look at the beading on the windows.

Some very good advice there, thanks.

Rehau is a very large german company that supplies a huge number of DG installers/makers.
    well known in the trade.

Thanks. So do they actually manufacture the windows or just the PVC? What do they supply exactly?
