  • Just been for a weekend in Dusseldorf and have to agree that the Xmas Markets are wonderful.

    Word of warning though!

I would never advise anyone to fly into Weeze. It's almost on the Dutch border and is nowhere near Dusseldorf.

We arrived at 9pm from Leeds. When we asked how we get to Dusseldorf itself, we were told that there's a bus going at 11pm, or 8 of you can club together and get a taxi for about 20 Euros each. As our hotel closed its doors at 11, we were left with no other options than take a taxi.

It's bloomin' miles away. it took over an hour in a taxi to get to Dusseldorf centre itself and as we ended up being the last ones dropped off, it was 11.15 by the time we hit our hotel. Luckily they'd stayed open for us :o.

Getting back is also a nightmare, a bus goes from close to Dusseldorf main train station about every 90 minutes and takes about 90 minutes to get to the airport. So add 14 Euros per person each way for your bus journey, but accept that you might have to stump up 20 Euros each (way) for a taxi and if you cant find someone to share with, a Mercedes type taxi will cost 120 (ish) Euros each way.

To add insult to injury, you pass Dusseldorf main airport each way which seems to be only 15 minutes out of town and has a rail link.

So, will we go to Dusseldorf again? Yes, it was wonderful and the people, the markets, the Glühwein and Altbeer were excellent.

Will we ever go via Weeze again? Only if we're going to Nijmagen which is a darn site closer to Weeze than Dusseldorf.

Check out other low cost airlines if you want to go to Dusseldorf, I know Jet2 fly to the real Dusseldorf airport.

I was stationed at RAF Laarbruch (now Weeze Airport) for 6 years and commuted from my house a few miles north of the centre of Dusseldorf - it's a 30 minute drive! Of course, having no speed limit on the A57 helped...

It's worth going for a couple days and also taking in the Christmas Markets in Cologne - I think there's about five. Also well worth a visit is the town of Kevelaer (about 6 miles from Weeze Airport), which is amazing at this time of year and a lot cheaper than the markets!

A bit like the "LONDON" airports of Gatwick, Stansted and Luton then!
