Inexplicable spike in electricity use at 4am?!?

I am leaning towards it being a faulty monitor or software. At 23:00 last night my reading was 34,124 (MWh?, I presume), then at 8am today it was 34,126, by 10am it was 34,129 and by noon it was 34,132.
But as the monitor has suggested my use is about 11kwh per day and these readings suggest I'd be using a lot more than that there are still a load of questions to be answered.
As one early poster said, monitors are possibly more hassle than they're worth, but I'll keep working on it.S AND I DOES NOT STAND FOR SAVINGS AND INVESTMENTS!0 -
Sorry to be pedantic but we are again getting our terminology mixed up; which confuses!
Over exactly 30 days it recorded 512 kWh, and my meter read 523 kWh so about a 2% under-read.
Sorry to also be pedantic, but isn't that around 0.2% you're looking at - if it was out by 2%, i.e. 2 in every hundred you'd have a difference of 10 in your readings.;)
OP, hope you get it worked out, sounds very annoying not knowing what the cause is.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

His readings are out by 11 (523-512), near enough 2% in my book.0 -

Like he said;) The maths, not the nap!!0 -
Cardew , thank you for your reply, I am sure most people knew what I meant. My whole point was that no ONE appliance would consume 7 kwH.What would we do without your attention to detail?0

Almost certainly a defective monitor. If there was anything in your house drawing that sort of power and at that sort of time, you would know about it.
That said ... are you sure that your house is entirely independent of adjacent properties?"Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0 -
The only thing that would use 7Kw in a typical house would be an electric shower. If that's not on, I doubt the energy is really being used.0

And now for the rather dull conclusion to this. Having checked readings against my normal meter they made no sense full stop. So I rerigged the monitor and its clip etc. Now there is not only no spikes in the middle of the night but also it is registering to within 4% of my main meter reading rather than substantially below. I think I preferred the aliens visiting or my neighbours tapping in illegally suggestions but at least I can now a) sigh a relief that my bills are not hugely more than they should be because of some dodgy electrics and b) see whether I can use this thing to help bring down use. :jS AND I DOES NOT STAND FOR SAVINGS AND INVESTMENTS!0

Does the OP have a night storage heating system by any chance?0
