Liquid medication in hand luggage

Does anyone know if you can you claim free extra hand baggage allowance for medical reasons? Also where do airlines stand on breaching the 100ml liquid issue - is this allowed for medication?

My daughter needs to have 2x200ml liquid feeds a day. Next year we have to go on holiday for 14 nights so 2x200ml feeds daily is 5600ml liquid in 200ml plastic cartons. We can't separate these into 100ml bottles - this is not an option.

We have packed them in the hold before now, but only travelled when she needed one a day and only gone for 7 days so this was only 7 feeds and wouldn't have been major issue if that bag was lost. However this time round it would be 28 missed feeds if we lost a hold bag and thats a massive issue and a risk I really rather not take!

Can anyone advise on this. Thanks.

I would contact the special needs dept of the airline you are travelling with, they should be able to advise.
  • I haven't booked yet. Just wanted to know if this is possible first :)

    Taking my Medication on Board
We advise you to carry any essential medication you may need during the flight in your hand baggage; all other medication should be packed in hold luggage.
There are restrictions regarding carrying liquids through the airport security area, but exceptions are permitted for important medicines. Where the quantity of essential medicines exceeds these restrictions, you should seek prior agreement to its carriage from the relevant airport and airline. Additionally, supporting documentation from a medical professional to confirm the essential need should be able to be produced to security staff if requested.
For certain prescription medication (such as opiates and controlled drugs) you should always take the prescription and a GP's letter. Some countries may need you to have obtained a special license to carry/import controlled drugs into the country.

    Medical Equipment
Information regarding taking medical equipment onboard is available in the "Aviation Health Unit Passenger Health FAQs".

  • This is from easyjet's website:

Passengers travelling with vital medication and/or medical equipment are permitted to carry up to 10kgs of medication and/or equipment free of charge in addition to their standard hold baggage allowance provided that it is carried in one bag. Where medical equipment is packed in more than one bag, the customer will be charged an additional bag charge fee.

Although I see you do not want the medication in the hold luggage (in case it gets lost); because the bag will only have vital medication in it; do you think the airlines will take better care of it to ensure it reaches its destination or am I being slightly optimistic.

Thats brilliant thank you. I don't know how much it would weigh but should be under 10kg. I haven't priced up easyjet as flights not released for June 2011 yet, but thats really helpful.

I am hoping someone knows of an airline that allows it as hand luggage as it is vital medication. However - I would be happy to hand it over at the departure gate to go staight in the hold - like you do with a childs buggy. If this was an option I'd be happy as if you board early enough you can stand there and watch them physically put it on the plane!!
  • I found some better info from the CAA website which I amended my post to show (just wanted to let you know in case you missed it)
