My surgery is ridiculous now. If u phone for an appointment u have to tell the receptionist what is wrong then she gets one of the Doctors to call u back later. They then diagnose u on the phone:eek: It seems they will do anything rather than actually see u. If u want to see your own GP u have at least a 2 week wait and u can't see anyone else unless u phone on the day and go thru the process I have explained.

I've been feeling really strange for the last few weeks and 3 weeks ago phoned for an appointment with the "On The Day Team" (u see whoever is available if they agree to see u at all) and was called back in the afternoon by a Dr who said I probably had a virus, no point seeing me, booked some blood tests. Had the bloods done by the nurse the next day and Dr said she'd call on Friday with results. She didn't so I called the surgery to be told she had gone home but had left a message for me at home. Got the message, bloods all normal, will call on Tuesday to see if I was better. That was nearly 3 weeks ago and I haven't heard from her since. Still feel the same. Is there any point speaking to them again?:(

The GPs at the surgery I go to are mostly OK. It depends how much in a hurry they are sometimes though. I think a lot of the problems people have with GPs is because of different personalities etc.
there is this one GP at the surgery I really dislike and think is terribly patronising, simplifying everything and talking in baby language etc (using words like 'tummy') and another I really like who will explain everything in great detail and in technical terms. I was talking to a friend who goes to the same surgery, they were saying they don't like the second doctor because he uses incomprehensible language but the first doctor is good because her explanations make sense. So I think a lot of the time it varies from person to person whether they think a particular GP is good or not.

As stated before, if you feel you are not happy with the Medical Practice and/or your Doctor (GP) then you can change to another one, or you may complain to the Primary Care Trust (PCT) to which covers your registered practice.

GP's are hopeless round here, i asked for a medication and then had to explain to them what it was, then got offered an appointment for the drug and alcohol abuse team !!!!!!!!!, then they prescribed me a medication called fentanyl, the prescribing gp told me to cut the patches in half to get a half strength dose, had i done this i would most likely have od'd and died :-( , i have changed surgeries now but the new lot dont seem much better either

There are a mixture of types @ my surgery.

A school head mistress type, moody one, nice one who always over-runs his slots and is the last to join in with the others @ open surgery!

They are a pain as where "Tony Blair" said he would fix the 48 hour rule for bookings where you want to book in advance, if the doctor doesn't give you a slip they don't like to book ahead!!!
  • I've got a nice doctor now, but he's the first nice one I've ever had, no one seems to care or listen.

I had one awful GP who literally wasn't listening to me, fiddling with some keys and then walked out of the room while i was talking! she then basically said 'you might have cervical cancer, but you're only 24 so I'm not going to let you have a smear test'..ridiculous!! It turned out that I didn't, but I had to wait til i was 25 to find that out!!

There are some good ones tho, but they alls hould be given they're paid about £85k a year!!
  • my doctors are so rubbish that we go to a and e if I think anything is wrong! The doctors are very flexible with opeing times, open early and late, can always get a same day appointment, I don't like having to tell receptionist what is wrong but can live with it, lovely and clean, doctors are polite-whats the problem then? The doctors are rubbish at diagnosing problems, my son went something like 13 times by the time he was 14 weeks old (my older son never went to the doctors), eventually got referred to the hospital and it took 2 seconds for the hospital consultant to say what was wrong, the local doctors said so long as he is gaining weight, then the sickness doesn't matter (never mind the not sleeping for longer than 45 minutes, me wanting to give him away). I can put one indicdnet behind me but then he got to 11 months old I took him to see the doctors as he really wasn't himself, but nothing exactly, told to stop being so protective and go home and calpol him up. 2 days later I took him to a and e as he was breathing funny, he then spent 12 days in hospital, chest drained, one of his lungs was totally white on the x-ray and the other one was 50% white, he had pneumonia and if he hadn't gone to hospital he would of died. The hospital was really shocked that the gp hadn't listened to his chest or anything. I complained and now the gps always do basic obs (listen to heart, look in ears, mouth, temp etc) with my kids I don't know if they do this with all children and realise that doing this takes up more time, but if this had been done he may of still had to go to hospital but some of what he went through could of been prevented.
The gp practice I used to be with didn't ave the nice surgery, and weren't as flexible with opening times but gps were much better-we moved out of there area :( and can't find one as nice.

Yes they should be all excellent, being paid that much - it's unbelieveable how much they are paid for what some of them are like.

I'm seriously thinking of changing to another practice. I had to take my son to the surgery one morning as he was obviously not right (he was 15 then btw!). No sympathy whatsoever, he had a temperature etc, and she was quite rude. It was the nurse practitioner that we saw as she deals with the cases that should be seen the same day. Turned out he had a urine infection. Maybe it was just 'her way', but I've never been so uncomfortable in the presence of someone like that. Another time I saw the nurse to have blood taken - she didn't say a word to me while she was taking the 3 tubes worth. All the same if I was feeling scared or unsure or whatever! The doctor I have been seeing I don't like at all either, she is so overbearing and not really nice or understanding. She ridiculed me for being anxious (one of the problems I have) but then for me not checking the blood results, - she said - how does that make sense!! then for seeing another doctor instead of her, but she told me to do that the first time I saw her, as she would be away on holiday when I needed to come back again in the time I was told to - and she actually told me to see someone else sooner rather wait for her to come back!!! (She's the only woman doctor there so not a lot of scope of seeing someone else as one of the other ones is a neighbour, another I kind of know as a parent at the school my children went to, (both men) and the other one is a man as well. Plus now they all seem really reluctant to examine you - does anyone else find this? erm, that's how you diagnose people!!!!

Before this surgery all changed around with these new people, there was a lovely husband and wife team, both lovely, I really wish they hadn't retired!
