Opinions of GPs

What is everyone's opinion of the GP service? Have recently visited mines I found the doctors to be curt, dismissive, arrogant and lacking in any kind of sensitivity. And at one point they Googled - yes Googled to answer a question I posed!

The only Dr worth seeing at my local surgery is so popular (because he is so professional and approachable) that he can't spend much time with patients - catch 22. The other two GPs are actively disliked.

Anyone else share my negative opinions of GPs?

No, I have to say that my GP and all partners at our practice are lovely. Always have time, courteous, can get in to see them and give appropriate care.
No complaints at all. I used to work with one of them when he worked at the hospital (I am a nurse/midwife)

All the GP's at my practice are great, really professional and I don't mind seeing any of them rather than wait for a specific one.

ETA, just noticed from your sig Inkie that you are a midwife. I have seen mine twice and I am not impressed with her at all!

well i guess that i don't expect a GP to know everything immediately. I do, however, expect them to be able to interpret information on the web about medical conditions in a more skilled way than any non trained person.

not every GP will have the same level of people skills. as long as they have a minimum level of medical skills, on the whole, i don't mind! (although at my old GP, depending on the reason, i would choose to avoid one guy if i had the option, because his manner was quite rude. other people found him fine - it's a two way thing in terms of perception of these kind of things)

    EDIT
actually, we had recent medical contact with a relative. when shown the letter from the doctor, i found their letter concise and clear and easy to understand. others found it a bit abrupt. i don't think there is a way of pleasing everyone on these issues!

    My doctors surgery is fab.

My DH went to the doctors on Thursday evening. On Friday evening she rung our house to see if his stomach ache had gone with paracetamol & if he was feeling better:T

I have the most ridiculous GP's... went in there on Thursday to make an appointment to have some stitches removed, asked whether I should make an appointment with the doctor or nurse to be told "the doctor retired a few months ago and the nurse is retiring next week so we don't actually have a doctor or a nurse" and given the number of another surgery. A GP with no doctors or nurses, unbelievable!

I have to say that my current surgery is fantastic. I usually ask for a morning appointment as I work fulltime and they always accommodate. I've been in there at 7am a couple of times which is great as it doesn't disrupt my day!

I phoned them last month after i'd had an operation on my foot as had some pain and wanted someone to look at it. I didn't think it was urgent but the lady I spoke to made sure I got an appointment that afternoon. Speaking of which, when I initially asked about said operation, the doctor contacted the hospital really quickly which I was impressed with.

I don't think i've ever seen the same doctor twice which doesn't bother me at all, they've all been really helpful, as have the nurses i've seen.

I've just checked their website as know they have a lot of patients as they're the only surgery in this area. They have 12,500 patients, so even more impressive in my opinion!

  • My GP practice is excellent.
I can make appointments online and request repeat prescriptions online, too. Can do all this by phone and in person but online suits me very well.
The doctors themselves are knowledgeable, sympathetic yet professional.

I have found some doctors to be very unhelpful and others great.

You will did locum doctors (GP's) are very thoughtful and helpful in getting what's best for you.

If you have a concern or complaint contact your local PCT and request to raise a complaint against the practice.
  • All the GP's I've had have been very approachable and friendly, but their level of knowledge seems pretty basic. Never had one that was rude or arrogant and if he/she was I'd change doctors sharpish.
Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.
