Endorsing cheques

I have just received my cheques back to me in the post with a letter from natwest saying they need to be endorsed on the back (they also sent me a letter to sign and date regarding "terms for the negotiation & collection of foreign cheques")

what does the endorse mean?

does my name and their signature need to be on the back and thats it?

the cheques have come from america (cnl bank)

thanks in advance

Natwest needs the check to be endorsed so that they can trace the origins and make sure it's legal transaction.

In order that your transactions run smoothly, it’s important that each of your cheques are correctly endorsed on the reverse. This means you should write the name of the person to whom you are paying the cheque exactly as it appears on the payee line on the front, being certain to include the title. Endorse the cheque by signing next to the information you have added to the reverse.

If you are a joint account holder both parties must sign the reverse of the cheque before it can be paid. If the cheque is made payable to two people you must endorse both names on the reverse of the cheque. For example, a cheque payable to ‘Mr T and Mrs S Smith’ should be endorsed on the reverse as ‘Mr T Smith’ and ‘Mrs S Smith’. Again, sign the reverse next to each name. If your account is in two names, both account holders must sign the reverse of the cheque next to the names of the payees.

generally speaking, when i deposit a cheque into my account, the balance shows.

However, I have deposited these international cheques, i think about 2/3 weeks ago now and nothing has shown on my online banking... is this normal? should i call my bank? or do i just have to wait the 4-8 week period and then it will land in my account...?

    thanks...

Yes. You're putting $dollar cheques through a £Sterling account? So they can't show a value - until they know what the cheques have realised.
