AMEX Express Rewards Credit Card - a bit of a warning

Hi all - just a bit of a warning as I think the info on MSE is a bit wrong. I saw the £90 freebie that MSE stated that signing up to the AMEX Express Rewards credit card was offering.

However its just £30 - not £90 as I have just spoken with one of their customer services team and also have their leaflet sitting on my desk.

Basically I read it (and I am sure many others have) as 6000 points per month for spending £500 a month, for the first three months. However, its actually 6000 points (worth £30 in vouchers) for spending £500 (as a total) within the first 3 months. You can redeem 5000 points for a £25 voucher. I clarified this just now with a member of their rewards team as I wanted to know between what dates I would need to spend the £500 each month!!!!

So offer isn't as good as it seems :( and MSE need to change their "£90 freebie" statement as its just £30. I am a bit gutted as I wouldn't have signed up for this card for £30.

Just a warning to anyone who may be tempted by the "£90" - its only £30. You can get an extra £10 by going via Topcashback though.....!

  • Could you post a link to where this offer is shown on MSE, please. I've had a quick look and can't find it. Thanks.

Hi - yes - it can be found here - just before half way down: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cards/cashback-credit-cards - I think it was also in the weekly newsletter a few weeks ago as thats where I saw it - I wasn't even looking for a credit card at the time!

Oh my goodness. Both staff in the AMEX rewards team that I spoke to knew nothing about this - I have just found what you have quoted on the website. I think I will take a screenshot of this just incase. This has made me quite annoyed - thank you for clarifying.

I feel much better having now applied and sorry to anyone who read my previous post regarding this - it seems that the staff at AMEX don't know about the rewards they are offering. Thank you :o

The brochure also just states "In addition, you receive 6000 points when you spend £500 using your card during the first three months" which again could be read either way.

Sorry! :o I was really peed off as I was transferred to the rewards team and both people I spoke to said that it was a total of £30. I would keep a screenshot like I am going to....just incase!

Do you know if the £500 is say when you activated it to 30 days later - or would it be calendar months eg. Sept, Oct etc...? How are you gauging your spend to ensure you spend £500 in teh correct monthly period? Thank you! :o

    Mortgage-free Glee!
I telephoned them and they said the month starts from your successful application - the 19th in my case - I just made the £500 in month 1 and duly got the extra 6000 points on top of the 1000+ I'd already accumulated. I've sent off for my first £25 M&S voucher. I keep track of how much I have spent on the card using Microsoft Money. This will actually be at least £100 in rewards for me as I try and use it in Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, M&S, etc and you get 3 points instead of 1 so reaching 20,000 points (£100) shouldn't be a problem.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try - oh bu99er that just cheat :D
