Marks & Spencer: purchased online, exchange in store palava!

Bought a suit online a few weeks ago, jacket a suit for 149.99.

Went into store today to swap the trousers as they were a bit too long when I was told I would need to pay the an extra £20 for the trousers as the instore price was £79!

Apparently when you do an exchange the system does a refund and and purchase for the new ones.

The lady was adamant there was no way I could have a simple exchange and that I would need to pay the extra.

Then I saw on the back of the receipt it says that if you don't have the sales receipt they will do a credit note at the current price. So I asked for the sales receipt back, put it in my pocket and asked for an exchange and apologised as I did not have the receipt to hand. (bit cheeky I know, but had nothing to lose!)

She said no and went to get the manager and the lady explained the situation to the manager.

When I spoke to the manager I said that If I had purchased something online that was on offer, then took it into store without the receipt they would give me a credit note for the higher instore price. Pointed out that I had followed their instructions on refund and exchange and I was being penalised for it. He accepted that is how their policy works! After an 40 min discussion they processed an exchange on the system (despite telling me at the very start the system would not let that happen!)

Moral of the story, if you are going to return something that you bought online return it without the receipt. May keep an eye out for large discount items online, buy it and take it back in store for a credit note.
