Errors in Windows

Whenever I try to browse the internet I keep getting Internet Explorer has encountered an error - send error report? I've done virus scans etc but nothing has shown up - what's going on?

Perhaps try another web browser like Firefox, or Opera
  • If the Windows Update doesn't fix the problem, try repairing Internet Explorer --> http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm. You'll need the Windows XP CD.
  • Sorry people, I haven't been ignoring your helpful comments, I just haven't managed to get online for the past few days - thanks for your advice.
Have you tried rebooting the pc?
Yes, several times, but it hasn't helped
Which version of Windows are you using? Have you kept it up to date with Windows Updates?
XP Home, it's a brand new laptop, only bought it a couple of weeks ago

Came with XP already installed so no CD. Will have a look at this site though.

Any more advice greatly welcomed :D

    https://www.ccleaner.com is worth a stab.

Have you scanned for spyware, and rootkits?

if not, see malware sticky thread.

Does this happen on every webpage (i.e. it never works?).

Are automatic updates turned on in control panel/security center?

If you have no XP CD, use this to backup your PC,,

Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    Already installed and used
Have you scanned for spyware, and rootkits?
Yes, with Spybot Search & Destroy & Ewido

If I stay in the same window it's fine until I go to close it down, then get the error report message. If I'm browsing in more than one window, as soon as I close one, the message comes up and all of them close down
Are automatic updates turned on in control panel/security center?
I'm not 100% sure - I'll have to check next time I'm round parents

Even a brand new pc/laptop needs over 50 updates downloaded! I take it the problem doesn't occur if you use a different browser? Are you the only user on the system? if not then does the problem occur with another user. You could try creating another user to try this & remove it afterwards.

Try 'sfc /scannow' anyway - you don't always need the CD.
  • There's 4 users on it and, yes, this problem happens for everyone. And you're right, if we use BT Yahoo Broadband browser it seems fine - would just like to get this sorted out as well.

    1) Download Ewido - you can now get a FREE version & for the first 30 days it's gives the protection the paid version gives
    2) What antivirus are you using
    3) What firewall are you using
    4) What have you installed

BTW I dealt with a brand new laptop last weekend & it took 4 hours to set up including updates to Windows
