19" TFT Monitor?

Apologies if this is on the wrong board! I think my Sony Trinitron CPD-1730 monitor is about to die (screen keeps going pink) after years of good service :(

I am looking to replace it with a 19" TFT monitor (my eyes aren't what they used to be) but have limited funds and not much knowledge about them!

From searching MSE I have found out that there are different response times but don't know whether this will really affect me.

I use my PC for accounting (Word, Excel), ebay, various websites, shopping, music, etc., but not for gaming or watching DVDs.

A friend is giving me a DVD drive soon so that may change in the near future and I may want to get the PC set up so I can watch TV (when there is a spider in the other room):rotfl:

I was wondering could anyone recommend a decent priced monitor that would be suitable for my requirements. After searching MSE I am worried that it will be a bit of a minefield as some of the threads have really cheap monitors but they don't seem to last 5 minutes

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

  • I did consider this one (there was a thread when Amazon had them) but was worried as a lot of people seemed to have problems.

I didn't really want to pay more than £150 and I know you get what you pay for (with my luck - buy cheap - buy twice), so may give this a go!

    Thanks for your help.

Are you sure its your monitor that might be dying?

I had a Sony Trinitron CRT like yours and it kept flashing pink, it turned out to be a hit and miss D-Sub connection.

Next time it goes pink wiggle the monitor plug in the back of the p.c, see if it makes it go away.

I solved mine be using pliers to slightly bend the outer metal surronding on the d-sub (metal that surronds the pins). Never flashed pink again. then I got rid of it on freecycle cos TFT's are way better :)
  • Hi there - Just bought a 19" widescreen TFT monitor for my Dad.
Very pleased with it - and very good value.
Also worth noting that it comes with a 3 year warranty!!!

Dabs sell it, but so do many other places like Savastore.

Have a look at Aria. I bought a 19' monitor from them last year and the service is first class. They have a few monitors to choose from and a lot are within your budget.

Just seen this as well..5 ms response time as well!!

I've bought the same 19" widescreen as CornishJon & no complaints at all. No dead pixels, easy setup (make sure you update the driver for your graphics card as some don't handle 1440 x 900 without doing so.) Excellent delivery from DABS. Incidentally, I particularly like widescreen as I can have the Google desktop down the right side of the screen, with my RSS feeds & still have a decent working area.

Have just checked on DABS site & they appear to be out of stock of new ones, but Aria, (Shropslad's link) also sell them at a similar price.
  • Thanks all for your help! I will have a go at the D sub connection on the Sony but think I will upgrade to the TFT anyway. Probably keep the Sony in the loft for a while when I do, on a 'just in case'.

I would shop anywhere for that monitor but Dabs, personally. Had a nightmare with their Customer 'Service' - you can't talk to anyone on the phone (policy), you can only use their email or online chat system, where the operators only use standardised phrases to reply to any question, and even that 'service' is closed over the weekend.

    A joke of a company.

Just as an aside, I noticed that Dell are now selling their 19" Ultrasharp models for less than the 17" models (OK only a couple of quid)!

I have one of these very good although mine has both VGA and DVI but I do use both, for all pc needs including gaming/dvds etc

Widescreen too resolution 1440X900 (only VGa on this model but works fine) I wouldnt go back to a 4.3 aspect ratio
