Water heater-using peak when switched to off peak??

Hi all,

I have economy 7, with a Gledhill Pulsacoil 2000 water heater.

The water heater has 2 switches, 'Off peak' for overnight and 'Peak' for a top up during the day.

Yesterday evening I switched it on 'off peak' and I noticed it heating up and making a noise. I went and checked the meter and it was turning around quite fast. So I flicked off the 'off peak' switch and turned on the 'peak' and the water heater made no noise and the meter was not registering anything.

Is it possible for the switches to have switched!!!!

I phoned EDF and asked them about it and they got me to check that the date and time was correct on the meter, which it was.

Anybody any ideas??

Thanks for any help. Si

A couple of possibilities to check.

    1. Does your meter correctly switch from peak to off peak? What rate was it according to the meter when you checked? Did the 'off peak' heater use to only work during the off peak rate? (It may not have been ever wired in that way, perhaps it needs it's own timer?)
    2. Check the 'peak rate' heater is not broken - it seems like it probably is. The 'peak rate' heater should work at any time.

It is possible. http://www.gledhill.net/pdfmanuals/2000%20Range/PulsaCoil2000-Iss11.pdf gives the installation manual and it would be quite an easy mistake to wire them back to front. Are you using an external timer, which could be set wrongly, to control the periods or are the feeds coming from the main on / off peak supplies ?
  • Thank you both for replying.

Premier- both switches used to work as they should. The 'peak' now doesn't do anything. The meter is in a communal cupboard with 4 other meters. All show correct time and date. All show currently using Rate 2 normal day rate.

Molerat-thanks for the link. I am not using an external timer. There are 3 wall mounted switches, off peak, peak and one for the permanent power supply.

I have not used the water heater at all over the summer as I can shower at work and the gym. Could that be a cause?

    Cheers for your help. Si
