Home Contents Insurance Question

I've just got a new Iphone and am looking to get it insured.

Going on the advice by many on the forums it's better to cover it on your home insurance than take out a separate policy.

I have Unspecified All Risks cover @ £16000, and Personal Effects cover @ £4000 on my policy. I called my insurers customer services to see if I'm covered for my Iphone. I didn't find the people I spoke to particularly helpful or professional in their explananations, but they tell me the Iphone is not covered.

Could some explain exactly what the all risks cover and Personal effects cover is?

The policy booklet is vague to say the least as to what is covered.

  • If you tell us which insurance company you are with then somebody will read their T&C's for you & perhaps be able to give you an answer.

Normal cover for items within you home would be for things like fire, flood, theft. For example your carpets, fridge etc. do not move from the home.

All risk would also include loss, accidental damage, theft and this would be outside the home and even abroad.
Personal effects would be for items that you would take out of your home like sports equipment, cameras, jewelry.

There will be exclusions for both the risks and items covered, so perhaps this falls into an exclusion.

You could look at the policy details.
Alternatively name the company and some kind person will look at the policy wording on line and try to see why it's excluded.

You probably haven't found the policy wording then. It should be quite specific about what is and isn' t covered.

Bear in mind also that generally claims for a few hundred are not worth making. This is beacasue
    1) There may be an excess
    2) Your premium gets loaded for probably 3 years after a claim
    3) You may lose No claims dicsount.

To give you a very rough ball park, adding that up would come to between £200 and £700, so you need to think quite carefully before making a small claim.
It's really better to self-insure for small items e.g. put £500 in a bank account and don't bother with microwave, fridge, freezer, TV warrantys.

The insurer is Wesleyan for Professionals underwritten by Aviva.
The policy booklet is vague to say the least as to what is covered.

When I say vague, I suppose I should say ambiguous.

There is a list of items under the Personal Effects section (which I believe means covered anywhere in the world) covered stating:

"including clothing, jewellery, furs, binoculars, musical, photographic and sports equipment"

    also a list of exclusions:

"Skis, snowboards, scuba, diving equipment, contact and corneal lenses"

"Furniture, furnishings, household goods, and equipment and food and drink"

So phones are not mentioned specifically in what is covered nor in what is not covered!

On another note what about computer equipment and laptops?
