Tax back for travel to part time degree

I'm about to start a part-time degree which is funded by my employer, requiring travel to Bolton for one day each week (I live in Cumbria).
In the past with other courses, eg. HNC's, the employer has given it's employees acces to a pool vehicle so no travel costs were incurred by the employee, but this year we have been told that travel expenses will not be covered and that we have to make our own way to the University.
Is it possible to claim back mileage through the tax system, in particular form P87?
I've been on HMRC'c website trawling through its examples and definitions but have come away more confused than I started.
Many Thanks
Terry

the actual mileage, no
offsetting it as a cost against tax - *maybe* but you won't get anything like 40p a mile backDebt free 4th April 2007.
