Small campervan/motorhome
Hi all
Not sure if this is the right thread - apologies if there is already a motorhome thread somewhere. I'm trying to find a small motorhome. I can't afford to run two vehicles so whatever I get would be used for shopping etc as well as days out/weekend trips. That means small/low enough to park in a multi-storey if necessary and good fuel economy (although my current car only does 34 mpg so not much to beat there!).
I'm not actually too bothered about sleeping in it in the short term, I think what I need at the moment would perhaps be called a dayvan? My mum is 92, feels the cold and is not very mobile, so if we go for a drive in the country and want a picnic, we have to eat in the car which I'm sure you all know is not the most comfortable of experiences! I want something with swivel driver/front passenger seats and big sliding side door so mum could get in the sliding door and sit in the passenger seat then swivel to face the front, then swivel back again to get out or to have the picnic. I'd want hob/fridge/sink, maybe even a loo, and for longer term use maybe a bed but only for me. Also room to store wheelchair and somewhere for the dog. I'm thinking Kangoo, Berlingo, Doblo sort of thing with maybe an elevating roof, and I suspect I may have to go the custom build route if not too expensive. Budget would be max £20,000 or a little more if they take my car in p/x so for that I'd want something fairly new and low mileage. Current car is 03 and 46,000 miles so would want to improve on that.
I'm in Lancashire and most of the small motorhomes seem to be down South so it's a bit hard to get to see any first hand. Any help/advice would be very much appreciated.

Actually, I think Romahomes are really cute, also Mezanes which are very similar. They are beautifully designed, but unfortunately the ones I've seen so far don't have side doors, just the narrow door at the back, and the cab part is set lower than the living area so can't have swivel seats - I'm not even sure if you can get to the living part from the cab, looks to me as if you have to get out and walk round the back. I want to be able to swivel my seat and be in the living area. I've got an email search in Ebay but everything that comes up is nearly what I want, but not quite. Guess I'll have to compromise in the end.0

I've seen some Japanese import vans that may do what you want. They have a really stupid name that eludes me at the moment.
Edit: Have you seen this site... supercamper.co.uk?0 -

They are called 'Bongos' and based on Toyota/Mazda/Ford/Honda vans. They are second hand imports, but usually very well maintained and in good condition. Most of them have automatic transmission. Try googling 'Bongo' and see what you come up with.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0 -
Try ukcampsite.co.uk (sorry, can't do links) you will find the very helpful people on there only too willing to give you some good advice.0

Thanks all, I'll look at the links you mention. I've already looked at some Bongos on Ebay and not found quite what I want yet but they are pretty close to my needs. :beer:0
