The beauty of Rumtopf is that you can pretty much use what you want
Your primary rules to always remember are: Always make sure that the fruit is completely covered with the alcohol and between each layer of fruit add a generous handfull of sugar. (Some say the ratio should be 2 parts fruit to 1 part sugar... I say it's a matter of taste...)
You can add to it as you go but personally I like things like blackberry, cherries and other soft fruit.
I have never tried figs but then I don't like them anyway... I would have thought they'd work even if they don't look too pretty (rumtopf is as much about flavour as that they usually are very pretty to look at with all their layers...)
Good luck with the Figs and the rumtopfDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

What is rumtopf? How do you eat it? Sorry for my ignorance on this, but am willing to learnThe reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Rumtopf is usually Rum (obvious) and fruit and berries. You layer them in a nice jar so they look pretty and add a lot of sugar. Leave to draw out the flavours for at LEAST 1 month!! I'd say make it now and give it till x-mas myself
You can use cherries, strawberries, in fact nearly anything you want, make sure it's ripe but NOT over ripe and preferably soft fruit and not thinks like apples... the alcohol won't penetrate it as well.
Once it's ready you can serve over Icecream, plop a berry or two and a little syrrup into a champagne flute and top up with sparkling wine, serve a bowl of it with cakes so people can put on themselves etc... or you could even drink a little glass of it with iceIn Denmark we often serve it over our rice pudding
Beware... Alcohol contents will be pretty highSo don't eat and drive
Traditionally it's made with dark rum but you could make it with whatever you prefer... I've used a bottle of bacardi that we never drink and couldn't give away! And it seems to have improved the flavour of the bacardi no end
Others use Vodka - I guess it's a matter of picking our own poisonDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

I have finished mine this year. I bought a much smaller and more manageable size from tk maxx. I layered cherries, strawberries, peaches and I think also a few plums. It took one bottle of captain morgan`s dark rum and it smells divine. I should think it will last to the end of spring.
I would start as soon as you can, while there are still strawberries in the shops and you could think of adding aldi frozen cherries (thawed)0
