Not sure when to tell tax credits about a change?

Hi all,
Thankfully my partner has now found another job after being made redundant 10 months ago.
My question is he starts work on 4th October and October is going ot be a very skint month as he won't get paid until the end! so we will have hardly any money next month.
He will be signing off JSA ofc and they said they will pay him up to the day before he starts work...also they mentioned a £100 back to work grant?? but they didn't explain how this works, does anyone know?
The question is we currently get £200 a month child tax credits which i could still do with in October but I'm unsure if i should ring and inform them of changes from when he starts work or from the end of the month when he gets his first pay packet?
Also i have read a few threads about being overpaid for tax credits then recieving a request to pay them back at the end of a tax year, should i be prepared for this to happen to us? or will they drop the payments straight away so we won't end up oweing them anything, or can they not change it until next April?
I find all this tax stuff confusing so any advice welcome! The difference between what we earn now doing part time low paid work and his new job will be ALOT! but i still don't fancy a bill at the end of the tax year unless i am prepared for it.

is he on Income Based JSA? If so he can update his work details up to 7 days in advance, all you need to do is ring them upto 7 days before he starts work with the end date for JSA the start date of his employment, how many hours a week he will be working, paye ref num - if he doesnt have that yet they can update with the employers payroll address and postcode and he can update the paye ref as and when he gets it (usuall found on a payslip or he can ask his employer for it) You will also need to provide and estimate of what his income from employment is going to be for this tax year (Apr 2010 -Apr 2011) the gross amount. Once they have the details your award will be recalculated with the new information, simples.
If your worried about not being able to get through to tax credits your husband when he goes to sign off can get the jobcentre to call tax credits with the information instead as they can call a specific number to pass information over to tax credits about changes of circumstances etc.0 -
I forgot to add there, dont wait until the end of October to inform tax credits as it could result in you being overpaid!0

I would echo this. You need to inform them as soon as he starts work. Yes, money may be tight for the month, but if you wait until the end you will have spent the entire of October receiving tax credits you were not entitled to. This will result in an overpayment and you will have to pay them back.0 -
Ok thanks, i will ring them when he starts work to let them know.
He isn't on income based JSA as far as i am aware, think hes on the contribution based one, not that i know what the difference is lol!0
