Tax credits for dads

Hi I met my husband 10 years ago and he was a struggling dad. Paying maintenance to his ex wife and also paying all of the childcare fees from the age of 4 months old. Why did no-one inform him he could have had help via tax credits for all of those years. His son is now 16 and still paying maintenance to his ex wife! It is always said that poor single mams have to cope on their own bla bla bla but she has money coming in from everywhere! Her wage, Tax credits, Maintenance, Council tax discounts etc etc. My husband had no help whatsoever! Please let dads in the same siuation know that there is a bit of help. I wish we could reclaim for all those years he could have had help but was never informed.

    Rubbish!

He can't/couldn't claim tax credits as a dad.

He may have been eligible for WTC as a single person, but if he is not capable of asking a simple question ... ;)

  • Why did he not contact the CSA and find out exactly what he should have been paying if you feel it was too much? if he was volantarily giving his ex maintenence and paying for child care, he obviously done it off of his own back. What a nice chap, you should think yourself lucky you have such a responsible and caring father there...

Oh yes as a single person or as part of a couple as the OP said they were, but certainly not on the basis of him being a "daddy".

Your husband could not have claimed tax credits towards childcare but his ex could have as she was receiving tax credits for the children. Have you considered she may have claimed and received the money and not told your husband. (It was not his responsibility to pay for childcare to enable her to work, I think he may have been taken advantage of by his ex-wife!).
