Unhappy with fitted kitchen.....how to proceed?..

Chose a small local firm to have kitchen fitted in Summer. Initially I paid half the total cost as a deposit, which I felt was OK, as it's a small firm and was told he needed this to order all units etc and was assured that everything was available
When it came to fitting, he was very disorganised - some items he had measured incorrectly, and had to reorder, I received some replacements which I hadn't ordered but felt obliged to accept. Once the fitting started, everything was put in very quickly and the job was mostly 'finished' in 4 days. Despite some items not being available, the owner pressed me to pay the balance. I withheld a few hundred pounds but would rather have witheld all of the balance until the job had been completed to my satisfaction.
Anyway had to continually chase up the missing items, and went weeks without any communication from him. When most of it did arrive, he delivered and pressurised me to pay the rest. I felt quite uncomfortable, but didn't feel I could refuse. There are still some items outstandind (3months on) and now I can see that the quick fitting is actually shoddy workmanship - the worktops are warped and coming away from the units, some parts haven't been fitted correctly etc. Needless to say all my calls have been unanswered and not returned - how do I proceed?
As an ordinary housewife I'mnot used to dealing with this kind of thing, but I'm fed up at being pressurised to pay £1000's of my hard earned cash for a job that is substandard.
Do I have any recourse?
