How can I remove the smell of pee off my floorboards?

I spent half the day pulling out a bathroom suite installed in the early sixties. Not only did I have to chisel under the toilet bowl to "persuade" the risted to hell screws out but when I finally did remove in from the floor a great smell of pee flooded the room:eek:  .

How can I get rid of this smell by tomorrow bearing in mind that I am covering it over with Marine ply in a few days and would rather it be gone by then.

The only solution I had with chipboard after I scrubbed it with bleach et was to varnish it with exterior yacht varnish and let it dry - the smell will then be gone - sealed in forever but you need to give it a really thick coat! Mine was cat pee by the way!

  • There was a thing about this on one of those makeover programmes on TV and the presenter DIY expert person said that this was one of the most difficult things to remove from wooden floorboards and sometimes the only solution was to replace the boards. The people who were doing up the house tried all kinds of things but couldn't neutralise the odour.

Hi towseriv,we bought a house from a lovely incontinent lady years ago, there was a trail of pee from the bedroom to the toilet, the floorboards were saturated, after drying out the smell was yuk,we tried all sorts including jeyes fluid, nothing worked,I was told bleach was the worst thing to use as this like pee is ammonia, the only positive thing that had only a slight effect was a bicarbonate of soda paste spread over the boards, this took some of the smell away, but in the end we had to change the boards. If it isn't too bad give it a go it might work.

On a property show I saw, I think it was property ladder, they used a spray especially for this type of thing. It was annoying they said how wonderful it was, but didn't say what it was called.

I have done a search and it seems to be an enzyme cleaner you need. One site did mention foorboards link below

    Hi everyone,

I am bringing this old thread back to life in the hope of some more hints and tips.

We have just purchased a house that was owned by an old person where nothing much has ever been done to the property. The lady was incontinent and as soon as you walk into the house there is an awful smell of urine, particular in all of downstairs area. All carpets had already been removed before we got the keys, so it is just the floorboards remaining.

We have tried, vaious air freshners, Desinfectant which calmed the problem temporarily. Bi-carbonate of soda on little plate. In the upstairs bedrooms the walls have been re-plastered so I wonder if that is why smell is not so harsh up there.

    Any advice much appreciated.

I think you want something biological that will soak in to the wood. Ideas to try include vinegar spray, biological washing powder disolved in water, Bicarb in water allowed to soak in, pet stain remover etc. If the floor is damp after trying all that, and it still smells, try a thick layer of dry bicarb powder to soak up the smell, leave it for a few days then vaccum it up.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

This might sound a bit off the wall, but do you think cat litter might work as this is supposed to absorb smells. You could spread it all around, leave it for a while and then sweep and then hoover up. It was just a thought!:o
