The reason you were in credit in May but in debt in June, is that your monthly direct debits are credited every month to your account, but bills are credited quarterly.

So I could look on-line today and find I am, say, £300 in credit and then look tomorrow and find I am, say, £100 in debt.

The energy company estimate(guess) your consumption. Unless you check the readings on your bill against the actual meter readings and inform the company of any discrepancy, you will always have a problem until they have an established pattern of your consumption.

Thanks for your reply. I realise that now - hindsight's a wonderful thing! I understand the bill now - I just didn't get it before. But I am going to, from now on, keep a very close eye on my readings!:money:

    Hi Ruby38

Definitely do that. One thing I've learned after reading some of the posts on here is:

Always read your meter and give actual readings.

Keep an eye on your fuel consumption. My dual direct debit with nPower was set at £40 a month. After receiving a statement with a £138 debt, I increased the direct debit to £54.00 a month.

Had a six month review in August and was relieved to see that the the debt was down to £28.12. It should be cleared by February 2011 when I receive the £100 dual fuel discount.
