Tax Band on Property split into flats?

Hi guys
I was reading with interest Martins articles on Council Tax.
I would like to check I am in the right band on the flat I rent but am not sure quite how to work it out as I believe when the owner bought the building (well before I moved in) it was then split into the current 6 flats.
I am not sure if we all pay the same amount of tax. Is tax paid on the building, and therefore split into 6?
The buildings in our street vary alot so I am not sure looking up the costs of neighbours buildings will help. Can anyone advise?!
Thank you

I've just started entering the competitions (July 07). When I win I'll update this signature. Look on the bright side, I shouldn't have to update it very often.

Firstly what band are you in and what house price (in 1991) did that cover? Do you know when the flats were converted? How long have you lived there? THe council tax is payable on each flat regardless of whether it used to be one house."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0

It will be calculated on the resale value of each flat separately.
If you look at the VOA website you will see what band you and the other flats are in.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

There can be some anomalies, though.
Our flat is exactly the same layout / size / etc as a flat on the floor below and a flat on the floor above. Those two have a higher council tax band than we do, oddly....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Shhhh! Don't tell the neighbours, they may try to get their bands lowered but in fact it's yours that's wrong and it gets increased. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -

The band is based on what the flat would have sold for as at 1 Apr 1991 (Eng and Scot) or 1 Apr 2003 (Wales) if it had existed in its present form at that time.
As it's a conversion it's quite likely to be in a low band.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
