Printer drivers - going round in circles

So I have been given a HP deskjet 6122 printer without the CD with the driver.
I thought having Windows 7 it should get the driver automatically like it has done with loads of other stuff I've connected by USB. Unfortunately Windows 7 doesn't seem to have the right driver and when I go to the HP website it says I have to get the compatible driver (HP 990c) through Windows Update, but I get nothing when I update with the printer connected and switched on.
Any ideas?
