My hedge is dying

:( I don't know which variety my hedge is, leaves are bigger than privet. It is covered in a white ?affid - stems and leaves and seems to be dying. I want to save it but do not want to use anything that will harm birds or animals. Any ideas?

I have some photos but don't know how to attach.:o

  • On looking at photos on the internet, I think it might be a Laurel.
  • If you put your photos somewhere like Fotopic or photobox you can then link onto this site - you can't upload directly.

If its covered in white aphids you might be able to get them off/kill them with a solution of washing up liquid - won't harm anything else but works on the black ones on beans etc. If you can put the photos up then other advice might be provided.

Not sure but stick down a load of manure that should pluck it up and water in well.

  • I'm not very good at this! Put photos on photobox:

Think that this will show them but do not know how to attach still.

  • What tends to happen with aphids, is that they excrete a liquid on which moulds thrive, so a shrub can look a lot worse than it is. With the colder weather coming the aphids will die or hibernate anyway. but if you want to get rid of them a thimble full of fairy liquid in 2 gallons of water, sprayed onto them (especially under the leaves) will wash them off the plant, and help clean off any sooty mould which has grown. You don't have to buy a sprayer, you can use an old trigger sprayer (Mr. Muscle etc.) as long as it's washed out well beforehand.
