How should I procede?

Howdy All

I have a problem, fairly straight foward but would like to get it right!

I recently purchased a kitchen from Ikea (PLEASE DONT HANG UP YET!) and in fairness they have managed to get it mostly right with just two items adrift out of 160 so not to many complaints there. However I did purchase an induction hob with the kitchen and it was all delivered on 3rd September. I have installed most of the kitchen and this week installed the induction hob. I subsequently ran the hob up as per manufacturers instructions and then turned it off. The next day the hob refused to work! I have been dilligent and tested the power into the hob and tested for polarity and that is all good therefore the hob should work but it doesnt even give any indication that it is going to.

The hob is only available from Ikea distribution. I have placed a service call but know that IF someone rings me back to make an appointment they will come out and probably say it needs replacing. So do I just request a new replacement hob ASAP to avoid delays or accept they may wish to repair it? And does anyone know how to get into Ikea customer services and get things done!?

Many thanks in advance.

Karlos

Does it have a timer? Have you set the time? I know a lot of cookers/hobs will not work unless the time is set.

  • He!He! I get this a lot with gas cookers and tenants but sadly no clock to set. The childlock isnt set either, simply power in but no function.

How do you have it connected up, is it on its own fused spur?
  • 40amp supply, RCD protected, 6mm2, 45amp isolator, polarity good, continuity good.
As I mentioned power going in at supply connection point on hob but no action.

    Thanks

The Hob is completely dead, no lights at all? Who manufacturers it?
  • I believe it is Whirlpool Philips for Ikea.

With most induction hobs a induction compatible pan needs to be put on the hob when switched on (to complete the circuit i believe).

Is it possible it is not working as you don't have a pan on it or maybe something burnt out when you tested it the day before (is there a reset switch or does the manual make reference to resetting?)
  • No you can turn it on i.e. get power and indicator light and as long as you place a suitable pan on it within ten seconds it will function, after ten seconds it automatically shuts down. There are no user resets on the hob and I cant go internal as it is new and would void the warranty.

The issue here is Consumer Rights and how best to get things resolved not wether I am technically compotent to either install or use it! And for the record I hold a Part P qualification so I am happy that the appliance is faulty.

    Thanks

In that case proceed with contacting the retailer for a replacement or possible refund, I wouldn't try getting the replacement yourself first and then hoping you'll get a refund later.

BTW, how much did you pay for it? The reason I ask is you could probably get a better hob by sourcing it directly for a kitchen specialist rather than somewhere like Ikea. It might be better to get a full refund, which you should be entitled to.
