Credit Card Transfer Newbie - I'm confused!

hello,

I want to transfer my credit card for the first time from Barclaycard to RBS. I went through the process but exited it because i was confused about the rate of interest that was stated - i wanted the 0% for 15 months and it just said 16.9%. I asked the online help person and they said that this was just them stating the normal rate. Even though i didn't complete the application, the rbs help person said that i might get declined this time because they will have done a check last time.
I'm just really annoyed as i've spent the year building up my credit rating and because i wasn't sure about the information i was being presented with, i will now have a notch against my name. I had a credit report earlier in the year and everything then was satisfactory.

Does anyone know anything about this? It doesn't seem fair that we should get affected by 'not going through with an application'.

Should i re-apply? I'm desperate to switch as i'm paying £42 per month interest only (!!!), i got this card wen i finished uni and had no job, so was therefore offered terrible interest.

Please help me someone, what would be the best course of action?

Thanks so much!

  • What do you mean when you say "they will have done a check last time"??
  • The guy on the rbs online chat said that they will have undertaken a credit check in order to offer me a credit limit/card when i went through the application process last week. As i left the application process at this point and did not complete, he says that it will still affect what i get offered if i go through the application again. Then later on in the conversation he started to say that he just wanted to make me aware that i 'might' get offered a lower rating. I think he just wanted to get rid of me. I know i should have carried on the application, but i didnt think that the info i was being presented with was clear. I'm just disappointed if I've been waiting a year to tart my crad and now I am told i might get declined! :(
  • thanks by the way, for replying!
  • i did actually copy the chat conversation but it may be too long (and slightly boring) to post on here!
  • OP I don't profess to be an expert on such matters, but I suspect that a credit search would only be carried out once you had completed an application for a card and (if doing it online) hit the submit button.

If you did complete the application but didn't include details of a card you wish to BT from I don't expect that would be a problem as most BT offers typically give you a period of 90 (some may be 60 I think) days from account opening to do a BT at the promotional rate.

  • Probably to check your report in the next few days with experian & equifax. One thing you could try if you have a decent file with equifax is to try applying for the Creation Credit card from Sygma, they only check equifax and they offer 0% on balance transfer for 15 months. Even if RBS has conducted a search and that is the only recent one, then I would not worry at all, you still have some leeway and no issue trying to apply for another credit card
  • thanks very much for these replies. i do remember seeing these words '(your application is not yet complete)' and i hadn't provided any details my barclaycard transfer. i told this to the rbs chat guy and he just seemed uncertain on everything, it wasn't very helpful at all. i think there should be a warning before you start the application that if you exit at the point when they tell you what they will offer you, that it might affect you rating. i was under the impression that i would be properly credit checked after i'd fully submitted.
i will get a credit report and take a look at what's what - thanks everyone for the advice! it's the first time i've used the forum and i really appreciate your help!
    thanks
