Passat Diesel - Cambelt or belt + waterpump change?
Having read the cambelt thread below, and knowing VW recently changed the guidance for the Passat 2.0 TDi cambelt change from 80,000 miles to 80k or 4 years. I'm at 4 years (65k miles) and have booked in for the belt to be changed. I see that VW offer deals on cambelt only, or belt plus water pump.
Is it advisable to get the pump done as well? I'm assuming the deal is on because replacing the pump is expensive due to the need to remove most of the front of the car to get at it, so it might as well be done while the front is off to get at the belt. Is the waterpump also one of those components that dies after a few years?

The waterpump on these engines is driven by the cambelt, so the waterpump serves a secondary function as a idler for the belt.
It's definately worth changing, should the pump fail you may loose the cambelt too!

Change the belt, tensioners, and waterpump.
Usually after you release the tension on the pump, then re-tension the new belt, the pump bearings wear differently, and can also start to leak.0 -
Defo change water pump also get a belt kit and not just belt.
The cost to change pump,tensioner and roller is not that much extra when belt is being done anyway.0 -
OP I think you are lucky you have gone this far on it. I would change after 3 years.
We had ours go in a Golf at 30,000 miles...(fortunatly still under warranty)0 -
It doesn't have to be done by VW (assuming it's out of warranty?), they are no more skilled at changing a cambelt than anyone else. But they do charge a lot more in labour fee's.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Thanks everyone - I'll talk to the garage about a pump change as well. I use a Bosch garage - just opened and manned by recent ex-VW master technicians. very useful!
Edit - spoke to the garage - they usually examine the pump on the day and recommend a change unless it is pretty much "as new"0 -
If the pumps are the same as others in the VAG groups the impellers break so the water isn't circulated.
I'd be changing it0
