    You'll fricking love this one:

The Darwin Initiative assists countries that are rich in biodiversity but poor in financial resources to meet their objectives under one or more of the three major biodiversity Conventions: the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES); and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), through the funding of collaborative projects which draw on UK biodiversity expertise.

£79,652,500 invested in 728 projects in 156 countries since 1992

Just checked. The General Teaching Council, responsible for the sacking of teachers has sacked 18 teachers in 40 years.

You wonder how they have time for their families, don't you. I hope they have regular awaydays on maintaining work / life balance.

It's a quango, I'm sure they have awaydays about awaydays.
Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there.

To be fair, the General Teaching Council [STRIKE]does[/STRIKE] did some stuff that needs to be done by someone, probably in Government, eg maintaining a list of qualified teachers.
  • I notice the National Lottery Commission isnt on the list.

Thats the organisation that wastes hundreds of millions of pounds simply giving out money.

    From the list being abolished

    This one can go:

Advisory Board on the Registration of Homeopathic Products

The Government shouldn't be registering 'medical' products that dont work.

I'm a very keen cyclist and I have never heard of these people:

    Cycling England

Anyone ever heard of these people (on a board dominated by people that obsess about house prices):

    National Tenant Voice

I like a nice steam train as much as the next man but do you really need this:

    Railway Heritage Committee?

I'm not convinced that women (the majority of Britons) need a separate voice:

    Women's National Commission

Don't forget that a lot of the things being abolished are presumably being duplicated elsewhere.

    cyclying england..............

the next three years we will continue to demonstrate how cycling makes a difference to lives and communities. From a 2006 base of £5 million, our funding has now risen to a total investment package of £160 million, a six-fold increase to support ambitious expansion plans. It will:
    • Allow 500,000 more 10 year olds to take part in Bikeability cycle training by 2012.
    • Build an additional 250 Safe Links to Schools, connecting around 500 more schools to the National Cycle Network.
    • Support Bristol, Englands first Cycling City and our eleven new Cycling Towns as well as continuing to work with our six original areas.
We thank our partners for their continued support, and look forward to the journey ahead.
    .............

    is it worthwhile...?

Do that many live on canals? I can imagine a lot have a second home, but I doubt many live there as primary residence.

Someone still has to make sure bridges don't fall on to unsuspecting holiday makers. That sort of thing.

You could be right, it may become the responsibility of local councils.

Except UK private schools, some of the best in the country, require no teaching qualifications whatsoever to educate. What does that tell you?

WE have govt departments which report to ministers and thus the electorate.

We have local govt who report to elected councillors.

Why do we need any quangos? Surely if what they do needs doing they can do it within the normal government structure? I'm not passing judgement on what any of the quangos do merely noting that how they are structured must make them less accountable.
    I think....

If you live near a canal and one of the locks fails flooding your home with millions of gallons of water you may think British Waterways is a good idea.

Railway Heritage Committe is a body which decides which railway archives to keep and who should look after them. If heritage isn't important we may as well get rid of all museums and throw the archives in a skip.
