smelly dish washer!

I have just moved into a new flat with my partner that had been vacant for a month before. It has a shiny brand new kitchen with new built in appliances.
We used the Dishwasher for the first time last week, but something must be wrong - because now it absolutely stinks. We opened it to check today and now our entire house smells of maggots.
Any idea what could be wrong? What I can do? And what will get rid of this smell?

I love my spell checker, it stops me making all sorts of stupid smelling mistakes. :doh:0

Normally the dishwasher attaches back to the waste on your sink and tap, is this the case where you are?
Try cleaning out the waste pipe it might be full of gunk, and blocked from building solutions.
Is it a new flat or just new for you?
You can buy clip ons from the likes of Lakeland Limited that stop odours building up in your dishwasher, I normally just leave ours a jar rather than shut it fully and this seems to do the same. Wet + long time shut = smelly.I had a plan..........its here somewhere.0 -
Sainsbury's do dishwasher cleaning tablets that are a lot cheaper than using the Finish cleaner (pack of 8 about the same price, and you only use 1 tablet/clean). As suggested in the other thread, clean all round the door seals - use a toothbrush and a bamboo stick wrapped in cotton wool to really get into everything. Also, open the door about halfway, and then get down and look underneath the door - there's usually a trap at the bottom (so water doesn't leak out underneat the door, and that can really become quite foul.0
