I have just had a load of emails returned from Postmaster@mail.Hotmail. I DIDN'T SEND THESE and I am worried that I may have a virus. I have Norton Security and have done a scan of my PC, but nothing has shown up. Can anyone help, please? It seems that many of my contacts have had these emails (or at least had been sent them).
TIA

This question is asked every few days.

Thanks for your reply, it is much appreciated. I still don't know how "they" accessed my contact list. I will run another virus check just in case, otherwise I will forget it!

"They" accessed somebody else's contact list, most likely a friend or colleague. There is a big chance that a friend of you knows some other friends of you too and therefore has them in his address book.
To investigate further you would need one of the sent emails including header to see where it was originated. Maybe you can ask one of your friends who received this email to send you the headers of one email.

Then you could post it here (make sure to REMOVE ALL EMAIL ADDRESSES!!!) or send me a PM and I'll have a look.0 -
Further to my earlier email, I am getting a lot of stick from acquaintances and some family members who are in my contact list, as every other day they are getting emails, supposedly from me, with links to dodgy websites. I fundraise for a private animal rescue centre, and one of the supporters sent me a rather snotty email tonight, telling me to stop sending him these emails forthwith! This person advised me to download AVG last week, even though I have Norton on my PC. I did this, but to no avail. What on earth do I do now? I told this person to block my contact and that should stop them getting emails, but obviously can't do this with everyone. I am now wondering if I should delete my Hotmail account and start over again. Any suggestions? I'm really upset about this.
Thank you.0 -
You should certainly change your hotmail password AND secret/reminder question answer, backup email address in hotmail too. That ought to stop it if your account is breached, or be as much as you can do if it isn't.0

Completely agree. This is known as email spoofing. In short, someone else makes an email look like it's originated from your account whereas it hasn't at all. To be sure you need to click the link, select Hotmail and follow the steps. PM either me or tronator with the results.
For now though, are these SPAM emails within your Sent Items folder? If so someone has discovered your user name and password and this is not email spoofing.
Please follow these steps:Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan
reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)
I'd suggest also reading this:

It should be noted if the above scans find anything then once we've dealt with that you should also reset your hotmail password again.0
