Don't know what to do now, as far as I am concerned I bought the machine off my friend (she took the money) and delivered the machine and I think she should take responsibility. This has put a strain on our friendship as I cannot let the matter go and cannot afford to write the expence of fixing it off!

    Really????!!!!
She was trying to help you out, wasn't she? Or she forced you into washing machine from her brother??
And now you are trying to hold her responsible? Look at it from her side - she was only trying to help to two people close to her and now she is in sh** because of it.

Pick up the phone and just ring her brother and take it from there.

I would phone your friend back and tell her that you don't want the friendship to suffer so will keep her out of it but can she give you her brothers phone number and you will take it up with him. Good luck
If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!
  • Yes she was trying to help me out as I needed a washing machine and no I would not normally go out an buy a second hand washing machine for obvious reasons but thought it safe to buy from friend. I did ask for the brother's phone number but she said she did not have it (which is obviously a lie). So I don't have his number nor know where he lives hence why I have had to speak to friend about it.

In that case I would stop calling this person a "friend" to start with..
  • yeah I have come to the same conclusion Any - will have to chalk this one down as an ex friend and move on.

if its a good machine with a good spin etc then it may be worthwhile you fixing it if you cant resolve it with the brother.

Depends what time of machine it is?

  • Its a beko 1400 spin A+ energy efficient. I have already spent £60 on an engineer and will need another £90 to fix the original problem. but now it has developed a new problem i.e. it wont start - so dont know what that will entail cost wise.
Prob need a new one as there is only so much hand washing I can do!
  • Sorry but legally you have no rights against whoever sold it to you - private sale of second hand goods - apart from it being as described ie a washing machine. No rights about it being fit for purpose .
So it is just a moral issue and unfortunately, that is up to the vendor.

    beko.. bin it!!

This looks like one to chalk up to experience.. do NOT buy anything from friends or their family.. or your own for that matter! and if you really have to do not part with cash until you know for certain it is in good working order!!

Currys had a decent zanussi in 1200 for £140.. (and a stunning 11kg load samsung my heart covets £899!!!)
