Gas hob is producing carbon monoxide!!!!!!!!

does that mean it's inaccurate
Yes, far too close to the cooker - that's why it is showing elevated CO levels.
If you get another one, move it further away from the cooker. Opposite end/side wall of the kitchen would be ideal, as the increased air circulation and diffusion will give a better indication.
To be honest, there's not much you can do to a cooker to change the CO levels produced as the gas doesn't mix with air until it comes out of the burner 'rose'. Thus, if the supply of fresh air is poor, then so is the burning of gas.
A steamy kitchen will also result in orange flames on the cooker, as this has a similar effect to poor ventilation - the water-saturated air inhibits the efficient combustion process, resulting in higher CO production.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
What type of gas is it using Natural or LPG? Natural Gas should burn a clear blue flame without yellow or soot, as should LPG cooker and hob burners. If you are using LPG and getting yellow tips combined with soot emission on pans, then it could be one of many causes;
Insufficient pressure,
Incorrect burner aeration settings(too much gas and not enough air),
Clogged/blocked burners,
Rusty burners in old appliances,
Use of the appliance on LPG without conversion from Natural Gas.
If you are doing the latter then a LPG conversion kit fitted correctly and set up by a Corgi/Gas Safe installer or Calor Gas dealer or one of the other causes corrected could easily solve your problem. LPG burners on cookertops and hobs should burn predominantly clear blue without sooting or yellow;but oven and grill burners DO have a habit of producing slight yellow tips when used with blue LPG butane cylinders(this is OK as long as there's no soot or smells), but when used with propane should burn clear blue on all burners.0 -

As an update - we had a second detector which we placed upstairs, far away from any gas appliance. That too turned a dark colour which supports withabix's point (#12) but by that time the landlord (rented property at university) had visited and decided the yellowish flame wasn't worth messing with so he ordered a new hob which frankly was needed anyway.
I don't know what happened to the old hob, I think they sold it to someone called Nile :whistle:0
