can any one tell me after 8 years can a lender still try and recover the money???

Yes they can, but if no payment has been made towards the debt for the last 6 years then the debt is considered statute barred.0

They can try to recover money for a debt this old.
However the debt could be statute barred -in england & wales that means that there has been no payment made to it for the last 6years, and assuming you haven't written to acknowledge that you owe the money in this time and assuming they haven't already taken out a CCJ for the debt.
If its statute barred and you write to them to tell them you don't intend to pay then they have to stop chasing you.
