Daughter starting Uni next year

Not sure if posting in the right place but apologies if I'm not.

My daughter is hoping to go to uni next September and is planning on living in student halls. We are going on holiday next year until 1st September but a friend says we will need to be back for 15th August when she gets her results so we can get the ball rolling, accom, student loan etc. Can anyone confirm this please?

She is happy to cut the holiday short. (we have planned on a month) but none of us know if she will need to. I have asked to her to ask at college but as yet she hasn't. Kids!!! Any advice will be gratefully received.

  • Hi,

My daughter has just started this year, we were told to be home for results in case she didn't get into her first choice or needed to go into clearing. We had to cut our hols short too. The confirmation for her accomodation arrived on results day plus other forms all that need to be returned, with deposits within 7 days, so yes I would advise being at home from results day onwards. Also there are student accounts etc to be set up which can only be done once you have received confirmation of acceptance by the uni.
    Hope this helps.
  • Thanks for the prompt reply. She has told me not to cut my holiday short as its not fair on her little sister, bless her. Me and her dad have split up and he has said he will sort everything that needs sorting but I have a feeling that once he realises he has money to pay out he will change her mind lol.

    Thanks again
  • Tricky one, if she's got an unconditional offer it might be OK but there's a lot to sort out for which they may need your help. My son got his results, found he'd got his insurance place in London instead of Wales so there was a flurry of a few days, resubmitting his finance forms (for London weighting) filling out online forms for acceptance, accomodation, talking to the bank to get some money for his rent (they wanted £750 by the end of Aug to confirm a room). Then it all calmed down for a couple of weeks (for him anyway) til it was time for him to go.

Student finance applications will have to be done way before results day, think the cut off date is May/June.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I don't want to offend but, sending a child to Uni is quite costly, even though my son had a part time job and had saved some there was lots to buy to set him up on his own and if their money doesn't come straight away then they'll need subbing -it might not be the best time to take a month long holiday that may leave you brasic for a few months after, unless it's all bought and paid for already, then I'll mind my own business :lipsrseal.

  • I hope you manage to get soted, her college are probably the best ones to advise, but I think your daughter will need to be around ,even if you are not. The letters we received from UCAS all stated that the student must be available from results day onwards, and I would think that is really the case. If her dad is around to help her if needed then she should be ok, but if clearing is involved I think she will need to be the one who does the ringing around to find a place.Luckily DD didn't need to do that so I don't really know the procedure.

Although I would advise against it, its quite possible not to need to be there. Assuming the student passes and gets in first choice then there's nothing needs to be done really. Student finance would have been sorted. Accommondation also sorted.

However.... if the student doesn't get first choice, its then a matter of trying to get somewhere to live in second choice, changing finance to second choice, and phoning the university to confirm she can go....

In terms of her results, she will be able to get some of her results online - I know this year my son could get two of his results online, but he couldn't get his Chemistry one online, so had to go into the school to get his grades. Another friend had us pick up his grades and text him results - but he was prepared to jump on a flight and get home that day if he had to. They can though check on the UCAS tracking site to see if they have any conditional offers that have turned to confirmed offers - indicating that they got the grades needed to get into their first choice course. However, if they have to go through clearing at all - she may have to go for an interview etc., she wouldn't have the benefit of her sixth form advisers around to give sound advice etc.

My friend took both of her children away across their results day and they were lucky that they got what they wanted and were able to confirm places and accomodation be email. They didn't have to send any deposits for accomodation, as it was all paid out when they actually started Uni .It was the same with my DD at Canterbury-she paid the deposit along with ythe accomodation fees, after her loans came through .My DD, however, would have been frantic if I had asked her to go away at that time, especially if she hadn't got her results (she did.)
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!

All depends on the Exam board, whether they do online results rather than the subject.

So the OPs daughter maybe doing all her subjects on exam boards that don't offer online results and not be able to get any of them online.

Thats true, but she would still be able to track online via UCAS whether she had been accepted at her first choice.

I'd say it all depends how confident she is that she will achieve the grades she needs.
  • With the technology available nowadays, anything that needs to be sorted should be easy enough to do while abroad.

I received my results by telephone in America and organised a deferred clearing place via the internet (several actually). Then the following year organised Student finance and student halls etc. via the internet in Australia. Didn't encounter any problems whatsoever.
