"Tesco is to launch a range of budget own-brand PC software, in a move that will pitch the grocery giant against the likes of Microsoft and Symantec."

In fairness you can look around already and find cheaper software than the big names for ether very little money or freeware.
AVG/Avast or OpenOffice are good examples of this.0 -
I really don't think there's a market for it. Either you pay to get the big name MS etc software or you can get it free as Reluctany_spender mentioned. I don't see why anyone would spend money on getting ok to poor software when there are already excellent alternatives."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

There isn't enough detail in the BBC news report to determine what it is they will actually be selling. How many firms do you know that have written software to completely replace Office (for example) and were just waiting for Tesco to come along and sell it for them? In practice, it might turn out to be Open Office on a CD!

It does say "The supermarket group said it had developed the range of titles with software firm Formjet." so I'm guessing it's based on these.

Most people at work/school use Microsoft products so I can't see much demand for this personally.
My good lady is taking ECDL through her work in the NHS and that is totally Microsoft orientated and she was able to buy Office Professional Edition 2003 through work for less than £18 through the Microsoft Home Use Program(me).0 -
Most companies use Microsoft stuff, so employers aren't going to be too interested in applications from people who only know Tesco's software applications! Think of the retraining costs. Maybe Tesco stuff will be used by those creating flyers for churches fetes or doing the accounting for the WI?0

I don't think there's anything that can't be had for free elsewhere. Ability Office will be the biggie but Open Office is free and much better supported. AVG do free antivirus, Ad-Aware for antispyware etc.
People will buy because they don't know any better but I don't think Bill Gates will be quaking quite yet
Can I help?0
