Basic Current Account for US citizen living in UK

Hi,
My partner has recently moved to the UK from the US on a 3 year visa. Her US bank cards don't have chip and pin, which make it difficult to purchase in some stores that are reluctant to accept a signature.
Now she lives here, we want a basic bank account with:

Citi bank are a player, as far as I can tell, on both sides of the pond. The consumer experience of the MSE membership may further enlighten your options.

I'm a US citizen too. I opened a Lloyds classic vantage account my second day in the US. Only had to show my passport.
