Combining train tickets......

Wonder if anyone can help - I have a season ticket from Station A to Station B.
If I then buy an anytime return ticket from Station B to Station X - can I return from Station X direct to Station A even though it's not on the same line?
If you have a season ticket from (say) Portsmouth to London, and buy an Anytime return from London to Hastings, you cannot travel direct from Hastings to Portsmouth.
How about giving real names to stations A, B and X?0 -
A = Alloa
B = Glasgow Queen Steet
X = Edinburgh Waverley0 -
Well I'm not the best with routing points but what I normally do is use the 'via option' in a train website search engine, if it's valid it comes up with a fare, if it's not valid it goes black and says no fare for that route.
So, Edinburgh to Glasgow via Larbert is valid for an Off peak day return.
Larbert to Alloa will be valid for your Season ticket.
So, yes you can use your tickets in that combination.
Again, this is my understanding of train routing and if I'm incorrect then I'm more than happy to be proved wrong.

Awesome
2 little points to follow;
1. Just make sure that your train from Edinburgh goes to Larbert.
2. As most people go via Falkirk or Shotts to Glasgow, to stop confusion with the train manager, I would print off the seach screen from the online seach to prove that route 'via Larbert' is valid. If you use East coast website click on the white 'i' (info) next to train time to bring up more info, then ctrl p to print the screen.Whoa! My train from Edinburgh would be either for Stirling or Alloa, both of which go through Larbert
I will print that route though, just in case0 -
:rotfl: - it actually costs less to go back to Stirling and buy a ticket from there to Edinburgh than to buy a ticket from Glasgow to Edinburgh. (at the expense of time, of course)
I'll never understand train fares in this country.0 -

Just remember, your trains from Glasgow to Edinburgh needs to go via Stirling, don't jump on the Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk express as you may get caught out and have to pay an excess.
You can travel short to Larbert and change there for an Edinburgh service, but the train needs to call at Stirling.glider3560 wrote: »Just ask for a ticket from Stirling at Edinburgh. They'll look at you strangely but will always sell the ticket you request.
Or buy you tickets online and get them 'tickets on departure' at Alloa station, saves all the hassle of explaining to the ticket clerk.Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0
