Can I write my car off?

Hi, recently my car broke down and it is racking up expensive repair bills as the garage tries to get to the bottom of the problem - they basically dont have a clue whats wrong with it and why it wont start.

They have now decided to send the cars computer device off to another garage who will hook it up and try and find out what is wrong - I know if the costs of repair following an accident exceeds a certain percentage of the cars worth, then it is written off, but does the same apply for a car that simply broke down and needs expensive repairs?

If the answer is yes, will my insurer (Im fully comp) send me cheque for whatever the car is worth?
I smile because I have no idea what is going on :o

You need to get real, insurance is for accidents, not your misfortune in owning a crap car. (MSE we need a shakes head in disbelief emoticon), :wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall:, that'll do
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

No, you can't write it off just because its got a load of repairs needing doing.

Seconded. I helped a girl on here recently who was thinking of scrapping a car- now we've got it working again relatively cheaply!

Stick up the symptoms or problems you've been having with it.

The Op has not a clue about insurance or motoring problems and subsequent issues. No way can anyone help at internet distances:mad:

Good for you, IYOOC, she may just have been better off scrapping it of course, no? ;)

  • I keep on having to do repairs on my house. The roof leaks, it needs rewiring and we could do with new double glazing.I have house insurance, does this mean I can get them to buy me a new one?I quite fancy a dorma bungalow.

Unfortunately, as regulars at repairables auctions will know, some unscrupulous people have already discovered that rolling into a tree or a lampost, writing their car off, is an ideal way of offloading a mechanically worn out/damaged car.
