How to handle depressed bf's boss?

  • I have been in this situation myself, and sympathise fully with your BF. It is hard to get yourself out of bed some days, let alone speak to anyone, especially people outside your immediate family.

However, I have also been a manager of severals stores, am currently just part time staff, but everywhere I have worked has the same policy.
Anyone who is off sick MUST contact their line manager themselves, unless in exceptional circumstances, like being in hospital, etc. If they don't call, it goes down as unauthorised absence/just not turning in.
Anyone who doesn't/hasn't has faced disciplinary procedures, and just recently one member of staff has lost his job because of repeatedly getting someone to call in for him.

I don't know if this is just company policy for the places I have worked, or if it is some employment legal requirement.

I'd advise he calls in and apologises for not calling himself before, and just explain briefly about his circumstances.

I hope he's beginning on the road to recovery
  • Thanks chelle230, that's very useful to know. I just haven't come across this situation before because I and other people have always managed to call in themselves. It's good to know because his boss is such a vindictive and hostile person that sometimes it's hard to know whether he is just being difficult or if he genuinely is within reason.
  • you're welcome. he is within his rights to ask BF to call in himself, but like I said I wouldn't know whether or not it's a legal requirement.
I don't suppose he has any kind of handbook, or info pack he can go through?
Also he will need to get his sick notes in, otherwise they are unlikely to pay him, SSP or CSP
