Hi,

My 6 year old has asked for an xbox for Christmas, and I dont know anything about them. I can see the different models really vary in price, Morrisons have got 1 for £100 at the moment.

Anyway, which 1 should I get, is it worth paying more for the new version?

Thanks for any advice.

edit hes now not sure if he wants a PS3 - which is the best?

The older versions were known for RED RING OF DEATH. Overheating basically, the newer model is suppose to be alot better.

However if you do buy the older version , make sure you get a long warrenty with it.

I had 3 xbox's and all of them broke within a few motnhs, bought a ps3 and never had problems with it.

Don't you mean which one do you think Santa should bring?;)

Seriously. The 250GB version is more likely to make it useful for a longer period of time. Although your 6 year old is probably too young to use it that much at the moment as it is usually used for downloading games, films and music and storing it from the internet.

So it really depends on 1) How long will this Xbox be used for before they want to change to the next newer console.
    2) Are they only using it for games and not doing much internet activity, if so then the cheaper 4GB would suffice.

I would definately recommend going for the newer model as you have stated they are supposed to be less prone to hardware failure and they are also much quieter.

Yes, both old and new models are compatible.

If you know someone who can do it the cheapest way to go is buy the new 4gb and buy a seperate 250g harddrive. Some good deals on Toysrus for the new xbox.:)

Usually when people come on and ask that, we say to go with what their friends have as there's always the chance to swap games, play against them, etc, but IMO he's still a bit too young to be playing on-line.

There's is no real answer to what is better. Ask that sort of question and you're asking for a battle from those in both camps. :D

The PS3 is around £100 extra over the 4GB Xbox if that's a consideration.

The 4GB Xbox would be more than suffice for his needs at this time. My 7 year old son has an older Xbox Arcade model and it does him just fine.

The ps3 won't be replaced anytime soon by Sony, however im pretty sure the Xbox will be.

I would go for the Ps3 over the xbox. I have a 7 year old and i find there are more games he can play on the ps3 than the xbox.

  • It’s all about the PS3 apart from the fact that it doesn't sound like it’s charging its turbo boosters for take off when it is turn on and played (extremely noisy), It’s more value for your money (blue ray player as standard)! As a warning though make sure you get a gold plated Microsoft HDMI cable better picture quality (In my opinion) if you want to watch movies from it. More choice of games and generally easier to use and a lot of free kids games on the online network. Get it insured if you have a 6 year old go to Game stores and the cover includes the controllers which will need changing!
