Installing and setting up SQL Server 2008

Hi all

I'm doing an SQL course and I want to be able to practice at home.
I've been given all the files by the course tutor to do so and was told I needed to install SQL Server 2008 in order to run the SQL queries.

I've run the files on the USB stick to set up the databases, course notes, etc without a problem.

I've also installed SQL Server 2008.
The only thing I can't do is get it to recognise my machine as where the databases are kept.

Anyone got any idiot-proof instructions or have I installed the wrong software for running SQL queries on a home PC?

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.
