Claiming back Tax - Part Time Work Threshold, JSA. Please help!

Hello,
First post here, but I have seen some useful help and advice so I would really appreciate some advice.
In the 2009/2010 tax year I was largely unemployed with periods of working part time.
This went over 15 hours/week on a couple of occasions meaning that I had to sign on and off and on again!
I estimate that I earnt just shy of £1,000 in part time work pay, which I was taxed on.
I also received approx £2,000 in JSA and the same in housing benefits.
I'm led to believe there should be a threshold of £6,375 (?) before you should be taxed - is that correct?
If so, I think I would be entitled to approx £200 tax from the part time work? What about the tax on JSA also?
I have requested copies of income for the year from the various sources, along with P45s/P60s.
Should I contact my local tax office with the relevant information or should it be done automatically?
Thank you so much for any help and advice.

Yes you could be entitled to the tax back, its not done automatically. You need all your P60s from the tax year then send it to your local tax office with a covering letter stating how much you earnt in the tax year and you have enclosed all your P60s for a refund of the tax you paid. Dont expect it to happen overnight. I applied for my refund in May and still not got my cheque through! Same last year when I applied!0

Thanks for the quick reply Karen.
I'll make sure I send off copies of everything and hopefully I'll get some money back eventually!
Just a quick thought. I sometimes play poker and therefore there will be money going in and out of my account. I presume this isn't taxable? I probably lost money anyway!
Good luck getting yours back soon : )0 -
poker income is NOT taxable0

What about the JSA tax? I presume you cannot claim that back.0

The tax office do not differentiate between one source of tax and another, you will be assessed on what taxable income you had and what tax you paid. If your total taxable income that is earnings plus JSA plus anything else like savings etc ( but not gambling income) is less than the taxable threshold for the tax year then all tax paid will be rebated to you.0 -
OK, thanks a lot guys. I have just finished drafting my letter.
My FINAL question!
Do I need to include housing benefit details? I presumed this isn't taxable income(?), but I could be wrong. I'm not sure if I have any paperwork for it. Could they provide a statement?
Thank you! : )0 -
Just out of interest, why do they tax JSA if it can just be re-claimed? Is it for when people get a job during the year, at which point it should be corrected on the frist month's payslips?0
