PC keeps trying to connect to internet

Hi all, I would be grateful if anyone could help me with my on going problem.

I am running XP with 3 user profiles.

When I log on to my profile, my network connection box pops up prompting me to connect to my ISP.

If I click this it connects but I can see no other activity, no pop-ups no odd sites etc.
If I shut all programmes and log off when I look at the log on screen for all the profiles it indicates that I have 1 programme running.

I have run Spy -bot and Ad-aware (on a daily basis) but to no avail.
Anyone got any ideas what is causing this?

Could be microsoft's WGA tool trying to phone home to check that your copy of windows is genuine, it does want to check quite frequently.

  • Do you use a firewall?

How about deleting all program access, so the next time a program tries to access the internet it should ask you to allow it or not.

I use a product called "System Mechanic" from Iolo which has a usefull utility to examine and edit all programs that run on start up. It checks the Windows startup and those programs scheduled to run through the registry.

You can stop genuine programs from running unless you start them manually.

Zone Alarm allows you to prevent internet access, if you want to go down that route.

Thanks for the replies - not sure how I disable all access to the internet.
My dial-up box pops up and if I do click it no browser or programme appears to be running.
I use firefox although I do still have IE on the machine too.
It may well be the WGA so maybe i will try and see if I can stop that - although I thought I had!

Cannot recall the exact way to do it on Firefox, but roughly:

Goto settings and connections - there should be a box that states 'never dial a connection' - uncheck that and see if it works - after closing down all browsers.

I had this problem, just this week ! I found that I had too many Messenger proprammes- i. e. Windows messenger, yahoo messenger, and as soon as I uninstalled Yahoo messenger the problem stopped !
    Try that.

I did the "don't connect to the internet" option and that seems to have done the trick. Don't have any programmes asking to conncet so no idea what it was. Thanks for all the suggestions
