travel insurance and pregnant

Daughter is due to go away 8th nov for a week.

She will be 24 weeks when we travel and 25 weeks when we return.

I've just read the easy jet terms on pregnancy and flying, and it says that you can fly up to 28 weeks without a letter from your doctor, so we are ok there.

But i just wanted to sort out insurance for her now.

Anyone got any ideas of the best company to use

thanks

basicaly, each company will have their own conditions as to what they will cover and what they will not cover, so best giving a few a call to make sure.

Generally, most companies should cover pretty much OK, as pregnancy is not classed as an illness, and whilst they will cover for most eventualities, the one thing that they will probably not cover for is costs involved should the baby be born early (although i would hope that would not be a problem in your daughters case).

I would like to point out that the info is my point of view only, and as previously mentioned i would strongly reccomend that you speak with the insurance company first, or read the cover very very closely (if, after buying the policy you find it is not suitable, you should have a 14 day cooling off period in order to cancel the policy free of charge providing travel date has not been reached and no claim is pending). But my biggest tip is to pay a little bit extra if you have to to ensure she is covered.

Hope she has a great holiday.

  • Thank you for your reply

I've only rung columbus direct at the moment, i have a anual policy with them, and i got through to a indian call center, the man i spoke to, asked did we already have a policy, and i explained that i have one, so to save inputting lots of details he asked for my policy number.

I tried to explain that my daughter doesn't live with me, but he said that does't matter for the quote, ,all he asked me was her date of birth, and the due date, he asked me did she have any problms with her pregancy now, which she doesn't.

He went away and came back with a quote of £15.99 this covers her for pregancy, but it doesn't cover her for cancellation, so should she take ill before she went because of the pregnacy then she wouldn't be able to claim anything back.

    thanks
  • Most insurers will cover her up to a certain date - usually around the 28 week mark (will vary by a few weeks either way between different insurers)

As long as she completed her travel before she reaches the insured limit she should be covered for everything thats covered under the policy = even if its pregnancy related.

What Columbus said seems strange - No cancelllation cover at all soley due to the pregnancy?? I would try again on their new business line & hopefully you will get someone that will explain it better. Or shop around and use someone that doesnt use Indian call centres ;)
  • Hi, You need to look into having separate insurance for the baby should it (hopefully not) be born prematurely. While insurance companies will cover your daughter and her pregnancy if the baby arrives early it will be classed as a separate person and therefore will not be covered under her insurance. If she is going somewhere like America it could prove very expensive :0(

  • Hi

When I travelled at nearly 7months (travelled xmas baby due 7/3) I phoned around and the companies all had different terms. I went with AA who stated that I had to be back in UK before I was 7 months (7/1). I took the precaution of having the 'top' cover.

I don't normally use that company as I work for a bank and have their cover but they would only cover me till 6 months.

If you are going to Europe don't rely on the old E111.

Hope this helps and have a great time!

  • Hi,

I've just booked a holiday that leaves in five days to spain through "on the beach" I accidentally put my first name in as my sons first name. I noticed it within 30 seconds of sending the booking. I phoned and spoke to the tour operator within 3 minutes who said there would be a £160 fee to correct it. I've also just phoned Ryanair who said there would be a £100 fee to correct it. I know it was my own stupidity but seriously? That's just ridiculous! Does anyone know of anything that can be done?

    :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
  • I would advise you just to get a letter from the midwife stating how far along she is and due date and that she is fit to fly as easyjet may say 28 weeks but may require proof she is under that cos all they have is your word if that makes sense. I did this last year when I flew whilst 25 weeks pregnant it's just better to be safe than sorry cos I suppose in extreme cirumstances they may question how far along she is. They never questioned me but I had the letter in case anyone asked.
