Sun Pipe/Light Tube - Advice Appreciated

I am having my bungalow, which I bought earlier in the year, completely renovated plus an extension on the back. is how I feel.

As the bathroom (1700mm x 2400mm) will be internal I intend having a sun pipe to let some natural light in. Does anyone have any recommendations and are there any issues I should be aware of?

All advice greatly appreciated.

Hope

  • If at all possible go for a small Velux window. Sun tubes/tunnels are OK, but a Velux is the best. A builder could make a plasterboard tunnel for it.

  • A friend of mine had a sun pipe put into her bathroom, when an extension blocked out the bathroom window. She could have gone for the velux, but that was going to be a lot more work and quite a bit more expensive. While not ultra bright it makes the bathroom usable during the day without having to put the light on.
  • Thanks for your replies.

That link was very interesting, markj, but I don't think I could manage it myself! Luckily, the roof above my bathroom is southwest facing so at least there should be a reasonable amount of sun to 'catch' (well, now and again anyway).

  • We had the option of a Velux window or sun pipe and decided on the latter as it was less expensive and easier for the builders to fit (they didn't have to make the 'tunnel' for the Velux). Like you, it is in a bungalow with the roof facing south, so on a bright day it's perfectly good to see in the room, which now has no other source of natural light. Don't know where the builders bought it from, it's not the same design as these for example: http://www.solatube.co.uk/Residential/solar-pipes-for-your-home/index.php which we were looking at online.

I have to say that it's not quite as bright as we were expecting, but perfectly adequate. It is nice to have natural light in a room...
  • My builder has given me a brochure for Sola Skylights.
