bought fake item of ebay - how do i get refund

Hi all,

I purchased a fake chanel perfume from ebay a couple of weeks ago. The perfume was titled as being 100% authentic and unopened. When i received the perfume i knew it was fake and had it checked in boots.

I contacted the seller immediately, they apologised stating that they did not know it was fake and that they would refund me asap.
I have since sent a few emails asking the seller to refund and they wont until i send them the perfume back.

I have not consulted anyone about this yet, although i have told the seller that i will have to take further action against them.

What is the best way for me to get my money back???

Shall i go to the police and get a crime number?
Report to ebay?

Im so confused as what to do.

Thank you

  • send it back for a refund is the easiest option. If you go through ebay/pp and use the word fake you will have to get written proof on letterhead paper within 10days to get a refund that way.
you could open a pp dispute and clain snad instead of fake but you'll still have to return it.

Hello. I really sympathise with you as I am going through a similar thing. I bought a clothing item from a website. When it arrived, the item was clearly counterfeit. I contacted PayPal who said they would dispute this. The seller then mailed me saying to return it for a refund. Now maybe I should have, but I thought you are a criminal already for sending fake goods. I don't trust you. I therefore asked for a refund as I understand to send counterfeit items through post is illegal. Anyhoo, they have ignored me. I am hopying to get a refund from PayPal providing I can prove it is a counterfeit. I have spent £3 sending my item to the brand owner to get a letter confirming it's fake. Hopefully then PayPal will refund me. Only thing is, I have read that if the seller withdraws all there money from PP, then I will get nothing! If this is the cae I will atempt a "chargeback" from my card issuer.

Whatever the outcome, I will tell the full story once I know the item is fake. At the minute I don't want to say too much as this forum is available to everyone, including the dead legs that have this web site in operation. I will keep you posted and can you please do the same for me? Good luck.

I would have sent it back & left feedback stating fake goods, After they had refunded you of course.

You cannot expect them to refund you without you sending the goods back. Ebay/Paypal fall down on
this side of things, Giving you a short period of time to get proof the product is fake.

Personally i would just send it back, Trying to get proof its fake may or may not work in your favour.
Get proof of delivery, Recorded or Special delivery.

Hi. Thanks for that. Mines wasn't purchased through EBAY -it's a "normal" website that said they only accept PayPal. The address they gave me to return the item is a residential address in a very dodgy area of a city I am familiar with.

I am really annoyed with myself for even purchasing it in the first place.

I am hoping and praying I get my refund. You have no idea what I have learned from buying goods online. Thanks again.
  • Thank you for your advise, if i go down the route of proving its fake, can i just go to for example debenhams and ask the sales rep to write a note to say its fake. Would this be enough?

I will keep you guys posted!

no not enough, you need a statement on letterhead paper (rather than a hand written note) and i think possibly from the company themselves (although don't quote me on that) it could be just a shop that sells the item but they aren't always that heppy to put things like that in writing.

If you have bought from a normal website (as opposed to an abnormal one like Ebay!) under the DSRs you have the right to return it within seven working days for a full refund. You do not have to give any reason to do this.

  • Dont use the word 'fake' if you are going through Paypal as they require proof of Authenticity which is expensive and takes time.

All you need to do is open a claim for 'Item Significantly Not as Described' and send the item back by Recorded Delivery.

If you use the word 'fake' in your feedback too, the seller can have that removed.
  • contact ebay by opening a dispute. I bought 2 DSlites for my children on ebay and didnt realise they were fake until I tried to get one repaired. I actually got my money back very quickly without having to send the goods back. Be prepared to take a photograph of your item next to the genuine article - it might help your case.
