Ebay several seller's 100% misleading feedback

Yesterday while searching Ebay for batteries I noticed that the feedback for the seller I intended to buy batteries from was 100% positive...at 1st glance and only after looking into the feedback details I found that the sellers feedback was not in fact 100% as the seller had various neutral and negative feedback over the last 6months. After searching through various sellers listings I found repeated instances of this misleading feedback issue. and was alarmed at the amount I found.
This problem is not just with batteries sales, I suspect it's rife throughout the various catergories.
I've contacted ebay to ask them to explain and was told they would look into it after the person I'd spoken to checked one of the sellers names and found the sellers feedback was not 100% positive as was listed. I've also contacted consumer direct, they have escalated the matter to Trading Standards.
I regard this feedback issue as very misleading as a buyer could wrongly assume the seller they intend buying from can be trusted when in fact the sellers feedback is less than satisfactory for the peace of mind of a safe sale. I feel this issue should be brought to the publics attention while Ebay takes steps to correct this issue.
Regards Andrew.

  • If they are a seller with a large amount of transactions a few negatives will be cancelled out by the vast amount of positives. Neutrals don't count towards the overall feedback.

If the seller has thousands of positives then 1 negative wont have much affect.

99.999999999999999999% feedback would look a bit silly though.

  • Also if they seller has very high volumes of sales what does 1 neutral or negative matter. Do you believe the 10,000's of postives or the 1 negative? It might be worth looking at their DSR's for a more accurate reflection of how the seller performs.

  • Hi, If I see the seller has 100% positive feedback in his description that's what I expect 100%. I understand there are idiots out there that leave negative for fun but when a seller has 5 + negs in the last 6mts and is listed as 100% positive then that's another story. It isn't the seller that's at fault, it's Ebay not looking and managing their feedback system properly which can obviously lead to buyers being misled.

It's just basic mathematics. Ebay quotes feedback percentages to 1 decimal place. Therefore anything 99.95% and up will be rounded to 100%, quite correctly. That means less than 1 in 2000 can be negative.

    For instance, this seller:
    http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=cablestop&ftab=AllFeedback&myworld=true

has 6 negatives in 12 months, but 23015 positives.

That's 99.97%, which is quite correctly rounded to 100%.

1 negative is wiped out for every 2000 positives in the same period.

Given that ratio, I would class that as a 100% seller, and allow for the theory of not being able to please all of the people all of the time. Ebay has its fair share of screamers who demand service above and beyond the norm, yet will often be found buying the cheapest items.

  • I made a list of several sellers whose feedback score was 100% when even after the maths should have been in the 90's. I gave 3 sellers details to the ebay phone rep, after he'd checked the sellers admitted there was a question mark. My initial post was made after I'd checked with Ebay and consumer direct.
I suspect that some of the replies I've received so far have been from Ebay sellers?
Do What I did and trawl, see for yourselves. Had I bought from a particular seller without 1st having looked at their feedback details I may have entered a transaction where stress and frustration was part of the deal. When I read replies to negative and neutral sellers feedback I now only regard that they are 50/50 true. If I see a seller who may have a total of 1000 feedback comments and has a neutral and a negative I'll still buy from them but If they have say 3 of each I wont, simple as that. So some may say what would you do to resolve the feedback issue. I'd say why not do this.

    Seller xxx total feedback 1000
    negative 3
    neutral 2

This should be made clearly visible in the sellers search results, listing & description page. I don't for one moment think this isn't possible technically. I'd much rather see the sellers feedback in the search results, I could save a lot of time by ignoring certain sellers by not having to go into the listing and then into the feedback details then out again, and out again just to get back to the search results. I'm sure this would sort out the black hats from the white ones. I fully expect the dodgy sellers would hate this approach, would it have an adverse effect Ebay's revenue? I dont know, what I do know is Ebay is now big enough to provide a safe buying & selling environment.
Buyers & sellers receive feedback so why shouldn't Ebay have their own public score too?

I did, and it checks out fine.

If you have contrary examples, post them.
