Sky IMAP problem sending email

Hi folks,
As above, I have sold a few things on eBay and had to follow up with a couple of emails.
I hadn't got any replies which I thought was strange so I looked in 'sent messages' in the IMAP folder in Outlook and there was no record of the reply.
So I did a search for the message text and the reply appears in my 'personal folders' sent items - but the email never got through.
If I send an email to my hotmail address it doesn't get through either - they just sit in personal folders.
There is bound to be an obvious explanation isn't there .... !
Please help !
