2 Pin Plug Legal ??

Would a standard two pin plug without any form of adaptor be legal in the UK .Do current rules say you can only use a non standard pug with either a relevant adaptor supplied .
This is a modem/Router power plug looks to be a product for the French market .

As long as the product is doubled earthed then there no need for a earth. Don't know legally but you wouldn't be able to use it in the UK anyway your plug socket wont take it anyway unless the socket is broken.

There would be nothing illegal with supplying a product that way as long as your made aware.

"Double Earthed" -> "Double Isolated" -> "Double Insulated"

You can use at on your UK plug sockets (at your own risk!) by opening the earth part of the socket (use something wooden) and then putting the two pins into the live/neutral part. I did this for the odd charger I brought back from France before buying a UK one. Some though won't hold fast into a wall socket as the weight is too much without an Earth 'anchor'. My router was one of these and I bought the UK version for a couple of quid off ebay.

Not sure of the legality in selling items in the UK with foreign plugs on them but if you bought from abroad then they will not be obliged to provide an adapter, though some do.

PS You can tell if the product needs to have an Earth connection on a French plug as it will have a hole above and in the middle of the two pins. Never seen these on chargers/adaptors though just general heavier duty electrical items

    "Double Isolated"> Double insulated :D

Why not chop the 2 pin plug off, and fit a UK one?

For safety's sake ignore the advice given by petemc, under no circumstances tamper with electrical sockets at the very worst you could get electrocuted if not that then it could cause a fire.

To be able to use it on british sockets you need the correct adapter providing it is rated at 230 volts, if it is rated at 230 volts then you could as said cut the two pin plug off and put a british 3 pin plug on it, however observe correct polarity.

  • Not sure if you had a house fire caused by bodging into the socket, that you insurance would pay out ????

As said above, don't do it .......( not a sparky but repair electrical tools)

If the plug is the actual transformer, you could use one of these and put a UK plug on it: http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-elec/pl03865/european-ext-lead-4-gang-3m-white/dp/PL03865
or if it is a plug on a cable, you could use this: http://cpc.farnell.com/power-connections/scp-black-10a-grounded/schuko-to-uk-plug-black-10a/dp/PL06737
    HTH, Brian.
Edit: or this if it is an ungrounded type of plug: http://cpc.farnell.com/power-connections/scp-black-3a/schuko-to-uk-plug-black-3a/dp/PL06730

Of course, you have only quoted it in full. Edit it down!
