Opera Outfit

Hi, I just took advantage of the £10 tickets to the opera from the MSE weekly email and now I'm having a meltdown cos thats not cheap if I have to buy a fancy new outfit! Having never been to an opera I have no idea what is acceptable.
So, my question is, what kind of stuff can I wear? I'm 25, female and going with my flatmate. I assume jeans would be too informal, and my stand-by LBD seems a bit too much for a Sunday matinee performance (long sleeved mini-dress). I think I have an old black pencil skirt somewhere if that'd be right?
Please help!
